Tim Orello’s Classy Looking 400ci Twin-turbo Small-Block

Tim Orello has a goal of competing in the NMCA True Street class with his recently finished 1,000-horsepower, twin-turbo ’67 Camaro. That’s a division that requires a 30-mile street drive followed by three back-to-back-to-back runs. He’s still dialing in the boost and fuel injection, but he’s already logged some valuable time on the highway.

“I take it shows and I drive it to work sometimes,” says Orello, adding that his workplace is 30 miles from home. “I drive it on pump gas.”

Orello has owned the car for the number of years with different combinations. Turbos have been on his mind, and the original plan was to install a single 90mm model.

“When we started piping on the hot side, basically we ended up with too large an exhaust,” remembers Orello. “So we scrapped that idea and went with the twins. Ends up that it fit the car better, since I want a full exhaust all the way to the back. It just made more sense.”

The 400ci engine is based on a Motown block holding a Lunati crank, Eagle rods, JE 9.5:1 dish pistons and a “mild” solid roller cam. Brodix Track 1 heads are topped with an Edelbrock intake modified to accept Big Stuff 3 160-pound injectors.

QMP did a lot of work on the engine, especially setting up the valvetrain,”adds Orello.

Josh Deeds of Deeds Performance handled all of the turbo and fuel system installation, including fabbing the headers for the twin Turbonetics 73mm turbos, bending the induction plumbing and mounting an air-to-water intercooler under the dash. Other equipment includes Pro Charger blow-off valves, Precision Turbo wastegates, belt-driven Aeromotive fuel pump and MSD ignition and boost controls.

“We made 1,010 horsepower to the rear wheels on 20 pounds of boost,” says Orello.

EngineLabs found Orello at a recent NMCA event, competing in the Bracket 3 class, but he says he was there mostly in test ‘n tune mode.

“It’s the first time I’ve had it at the track with this setup,” sums up Orello. “We’re just shaking it down but it’s running really well.”
