Dodge just announced that the new 6.2-liter supercharged Hellcat Hemi V8 will be rated at 707 horsepower with 650 lb-ft peak torque.
That will make the new 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT the most powerful musclecar ever produced.
The engine is Dodge’s first attempt at supercharging, using an Eaton-based twin-screw design that will be overdriven at 2.36:1 for a max rotor speed of 14,600 rpm. Boost will be limited to 11.6 psi.
The Challenger will come with two key fobs: one red and one black. Only the red key can unlock the full potential of the engine while the black key limits power to around 500 horsepower. Backing up the iron-block-based platform will be a new 8-speed automatic transmission.
Other key factors in the engine’s design and construction include 600 cc/min fuel injectors, two air-to-water intercoolers, 92mm throttle body, forged steel crankshaft, forged alloy pistons, powder-forged connecting rods, DLC pins, piston-cooling jets and high-flow gerotor oil pump. Dodge says the Hellcat features 91 percent new content when compared to the standard 392 Hemi engine.
