We came across a video of a twin-turbo big-block screaming away on the dyno at Nyes Automotive in Muncie, Indiana, and wanted to know more. But owner Pat McCreery, who’s been at the family-owned shop since 1980, says the builder of that engine doesn’t want any information released. He did reveal that the engine was making serious horsepower and destined for a 2-wheel-drive truck puller. 

So we asked McCreery about the engines he likes to build, and he directed us to a video of his 434ci bracket-race engine. 

“It’s a power to budget engine for the guy who can’t afford a high-end small-block,” says McCreery, who also had a 2,400-horsepower triple-turbo Cummins on his dyno recently. “In a 3,200-pound bracket car, it’ll run low nines in the quarter mile.”

The 434 has a 14:1 compression ratio and boasts a Dart block, Eagle crank and rods, Dart 227cc head and a solid roller cam. Cost is around $10,500 without carb and ignition.

“We deal mostly with conventional engines,” says McCreery, adding that all the CNC work is done in house. “We looked at the LS and decided not to go after it. We do a ton of big blocks here.”
