Carbureted Coyote Pulls 590 Horsepower in First Dyno Test

One of the first carbureted Coyote engines to sport a 4150-style Holley has twisted Westech SuperFlow dyno for 590 horsepower with 447 lb-ft peak torque.

“This is a totally streetable motor with moderate cams and 12:1 compression,” notes project manager Mark Gearhart. “With aggressive cams and the full 13:1 compression ratio, we could have probably been in the 620-to-640 horsepower range.”

Readers can catch up on the project through the following three stories and links:

When L&R Machine finished the assembly with Livernois CNC-ported heads, 1.500/1.262 Ferrea valves and four new sticks from Comp Cams, the 314ci engine was shipped to Westech Performance for two days of dyno testing and tuning.

“We made over 50 runs on the engine  – adjusting ignition timing, different Holley carburetors, fuel, and cam timing – picking up over 45 horsepower from when we started,” says Gearhart. “We were going to spray it with some Zex nitrous, but ran out of time trying to fine tune the motor naturally aspirated.”

While a few street-rod engine builders have assembled Coyote engines with Webers based on a unique manifold from Jim Inglese, this is likely the first attempt at getting a Holley on top of a traditional-style 4-barrel intake. Currently there are no cast intakes

Enjoy these two videos that offer an early peek at the tests. A full story with a complete roundup of the engine setup and dyno tuning is forthcoming.
