SEMA 2013: Hyundai Launches V6, Turbo-4 Crate-engine Program

The Hyundai 3.8-liter Lambda V6 engine will be available as a crate engine for $9,000.

Hyundai is entering the crate-engine business with the release of a 3.8-liter V6 and a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4.

The factory crate program was announced at SEMA and allows owners of older-model Hyundai Genesis Coupes to consider additional performance options.

“As more Genesis Coupes have entered the pre-owned enthusiast market since its 2009 launch, we’ve witnessed strong interest in leveraging the low cost potential of this rear-drive platform and its powertrains for the tuner market and motorsports,” says John Krafcik, president and CEO, Hyundai Motor America. “Now, with our new crate engine program, Hyundai is making it more affordable for these same enthusiasts to modify their Genesis Coupe, or perhaps inject some high-value horsepower into other platforms.”

In other words, who wants to be the first to have a Hyundai-powered street rod or kit car? Wouldn’t that V6 be a neat fit in some unusual body style, like a Corvair or vintage Studebaker?

In stock form, the direct-injected V6 is rated at 333 horsepower, but tuners have had noticeable success in taking the Lambda engine significantly higher.

“Hyundai makes impressively robust engines throughout its line-up, so the addition of this crate engine program is sure to raise tuner enthusiasm for radical Hyundai modifications even more,” says Bisi Ezerioha, who created a 1,000-horsepower twin-turbo V6 Genesis Coupe for the SEMA Show.

The V6 will cost $9,000 and includes intake manifold, ignition coil, injectors and fuel-delivery assemblies.

The Theta turbo-4 engine is available with or without the turbocharger and starts at $4,500.

The Theta turbo-4 is available with or without the turbo, intercooler and intake air duct. The baseline model is starts at 4,500 and the fully dressed version is $6,000. It’s rated at 274 horsepower. Hyundai officials say the 4,500 starting price makes the 2.0-liter engine prime for spec-engine development.

Both engines are covered by Hyundai’s 12-month/12,000 mile limited warranty.

Hyundai does offer a 5.0-liter V8 in the Genesis Coupe, but no word if that engine will be offered in a crate.
