Roush Performance is reenergizing its line of crate engines with offerings from mild to supercharged wild.
“We’re bringing back the crate engine program,” promises Tim Wheeler of Roush Performance.
Roush showed off a generous menu of engine models but stressed that every engine is custom built to customer needs, and every engine carries a 2-year/24,000-mile limited warranty. Horsepower ranges from 400 with 375 lb-ft peak torque all the way up to 630 horsepower with 690 lb-ft.
The small-block series offers engines with Dart 4-bolt blocks in both 8.2- and 9.5-inch deck heights. The smaller deck allows 327ci, 342ci and 353ci displacements while the taller decks supports 402ci and 427ci displacements — the latter making up 60 percent of the program’s current business.
Other models are based on the Shelby aluminum FE block (468ci and 511ci) and the Ford A460 block (588ci). Horsepower differences are executed with camshaft and induction changes. Roush can also provide clutch assemblies balanced along with the rotating assembly.
“All the engines are built from carb to pan, flywheel to drive,” says Alexander. “Upgrades are available, and we can dress them up any way the customer wants.”
Appearance options include painted blocks, polished components like the thermostat housing, different oil pans to support vehicle installation. All engines come with “Powered by Roush” engraved plaques.
One of the more exotic options is the 8-stack fuel-injection system, and it’s available on most models, including the Shelby aluminum block. Another favorite is the Roush valve cover with the integrated spark plug wire loom.
Another variety of the Roush Performance crate engine program is a supercharged version of Ford’s Aluminator crate engine.
“It runs on 8-to-10 pounds of boost,” adds Alexander, noting that all engines come with a dyno chart. “It’s tuned and calibrated with the optional ECU, and it comes with a cold-air kit.”
Roush Performance can handle just about any engine order, including providing just a short block or long block for the customer to finish, and competition engines are also available. Turnaround time is generally four to six weeks.
