Your engine’s oiling system is the most important aspect of its operation; without oil, the engine will size and destroy itself. When an engine is subjected to race conditions, the oiling system becomes even more important, as the G-forces encountered in everyday driving don’t come close to the side-to-side, acceleration and deceleration forces an engine sees under hard use.
We caught this sweet point-of-view install of one of Canton Racing Products‘ Accusump oil accumulators, shot by Ashley Hartman, owner of ‘Pipsqueak The Goat‘, her 2004 LS-powered GTO. The GTO is raced in drift events and other forms of motorsports, and in an attempt to keep the engine properly oiled, she selected the Accusump to assist in the process.
By connecting to the pressure side of the engine’s oiling system, the Accusump is charged by the engine’s oil pump. Its premise is simple – there is an air side (that you pre-charge through a Schrader valve) and the oil reservoir side. In times of low oil pressure, the air pushes against the piston, forcing the stored oil back into the engine’s oiling system. Not only does this help during race conditions, it also releases oil to the engine during an engine startup to prevent scuffing and pre-lube the moving parts, more quickly than the engine’s oil pump can do so.
Hartman covers the process of building a schematic out for the system’s fluid lines, mounting the oil reservoir, assembling and connecting all of the fittings, then finishing the install all the way through engine start and filling/charging of the Accusump.
Throughout the video, she provides some installation tips as well as commentary on the installation itself. The real-world install of a product that’s useful no matter what type of racing you’re doing is helpful to watch – the install tips give insight to the system’s operation.
