Video: Beautiful Ford SOHC Engine Rumbles on Ed Pink’s Dyno

This striking Ford SOHC engine turned lots of heads at the SEMA Show — even making EngineLabs’ Top 50 list. Now it’s entertaining more engine enthusiasts with a rowdy video performance on the dyno.

Note the detail of the intake and the vintage Le Mans-style bowls on the Holley carbs.

Built by Ed Pink Racing Engines, the beautifully detailed all-alloy V8 helped a ’67 Fairlane built by Pure Vision Design win the Ford Best of Show honor at SEMA, and later followed up with a Best Street Machine at the Grand National Roadster Show.

The engine measures out to 484ci with a square 4.250 x 4.250 bore and stroke. It’s based on aluminum heads and block from Robert Pond Motorsports.

“The owner of the car is a big fan of the single overhead cam engine,” notes Frank Honsowetz, general manager at Ed Pink’s shop. “And he knew about this company’s association with that engine in the past. And we had done a previous project for [Pure Vision owner] Steve Strope in the past involving a Ford engine.”

Here’s the engine in the award-winning Fairlane at the SEMA Show.

The rotating assembly comprises a Scat forged steel crank, Carrillo rods and CP pistons (10:1) wrapped with Total Seal rings. Other internals include custom Comp Cams camshafts, aftermarket replacement timing sets, Cometic gaskets, Calico-coated Clevite rod bearings, Calico-coated ACL main bearings and ARP hardware.

On the bottom is a Milodon oil pump and off-the-shelf 7-quart pan selected to fit the chassis. Up top the heads were fitted with Ferrea stainless-steel valves and PAC springs. The intake manifold was custom fabricated by Ace’d Auto Worx and features four Holley 2-barrel carbs.

“There’s nothing trick as far as progressive linkage,” says Honsowetz. “All four corners operate equally.”

Providing spark is a Joe Hunt distributor built to look like magneto.

“Power was in the high 500s,” teases Honsowetz. “It sounds spectacular, and in the car it has an open exhaust, so it’s going to sound just as good.”
