Throwback Thursday: PerTronix Launches New Line Of High-Torque Starters

What a year this has been. We’re moving on to 2020, and this will be the last Throwback Thursday for 2019. Ready or not, the week is finally coming to an end. That’s right, it’s time for another Throwback Thursday. Each week we take a look back through the Power Automedia vaults and locate an article we feel is worthy of another look. This week, we are taking a very short trip back to June 2016, to check out, Pertronix Launches New Line Of High Torque Starters.

The inspiration for this innovative piece of equipment comes from a very unlikely source — the Harley Davidson motorcycle. “Harley motors are notoriously hard to start due to the combination of a long-stroke V-Twin motor, with an odd firing order that places the two pistons coming up on top-dead-center,” says Don Lindfors of Pertronix. “This puts a huge load on the starter, and now if you add aftermarket high-compression pistons and short duration cams, and it even gets worse.

Every Contour starter is available in either a show-quality polished finish or a black powdercoat.

“We figured if these starters could start these beasts, with many Harley-type motors now in the 140-plus cubic-inch range (which is like trying to start a 572 cubic inch big-block with six of the plug wires disconnected), we could use that technology to start V8s, so we adapted the technology into a unique swoopy looking body.”

In the original article, you get to know all the benefits of this little engine cranker, and suffice to say, there’s a lot more in-depth insight in this informative article. That definitely makes it worthy of a second look. For that reason, I selected, PerTronix Launches New Line Of High Torque Starters, as this week’s Throwback Thursday showcase article.
