LIQUI MOLY Introduces Additive For New and Rebuilt Turbochargers

Forced induction is gaining in popularity with performance enthusiasts and car and truck manufacturers alike. GM, Ford, and Mopar have offered supercharged applications over the years, but we see more and more turbochargers, especially in the aftermarket. And while it’s known to use a quality assembly lube when building an engine, new turbochargers are often neglected upon startup, which can rapidly take out bearing material. To fix this problem, LIQUI MOLY now offers an additive, perfect for new and rebuilt turbochargers.

Peter Szarafinski, Head of Media Relations International for LIQUI MOLY, said, “Due to their extremely high rotational speeds, the right lubrication is particularly important for turbochargers. But this is missing if it has been replaced or reinstalled after a repair. Wear, and the risk of damage is then particularly high. But it doesn’t have to be so. The Turbocharger Additive from the oil and additive specialist LIQUI MOLY protects the sensitive unit when it is first used.”

Usually, when you install a new or rebuilt turbocharger, the bearings inside the unit are dry. Upon startup, the engine needs to build oil pressure before supplying the proper lubrication to the new or rebuilt turbo. Without proper oiling, the turbocharger will not only receive premature wear, but it can also damage the turbo, drastically shortening the life of the unit.

“Several 100,000 revolutions per minute without sufficient lubrication – that really takes it out of the material,” says Harry Hartkorn, Head of Application Technology at LIQUI MOLY.

LIQUI MOLY uses a solid lubricant known as MoS2 in its turbo additive and in large doses. The MoS2 attaches to plain bearings’ metal surface, which guarantees lubrication at the turbocharger during the first startup. This additive will prevent failures, increasing the service life of the turbocharger.
