The horsepower wars are heating up among the Big Three as Detroit continues to churn out more powerful pony cars – as well as sport compacts, sedans and trucks – by the day. The Ford Coyote and EcoBoost, GM Gen V small-block and Mopar Hemi have found homes in a growing list of vehicles that far outperform the larger cubic-inch variants from yesteryear. But, of course, as hot rodders that is not good enough. We tinker and tweak until we eek out every last drop of performance, and thankfully Livernois Motorsports is here to help. Here is a look at the Ford offerings we peeped at the 2016 PRI Show.
Starting with the smallest engine first, Livernois offers CNC ported cylinder heads for the 2.3L EcoBoost in the Mustang and Focus. The Pro series (PN LPP760114) offers a proprietary port and multi-angle valve job to improve airflow. However, the Race series (PN LPP760115) steps up to 33mm stainless steel intake valves and 30.5mm exhaust valves. An upgraded spring package is included with retainers, locks, and high-temp valve seals.
For the stout 3.5L EcoBoost V6, Livernois offers only the Race Series (PN LPP760116) with production valves, springs, and retainers. Don’t let the use of factory parts fool you, though, as Livernois states that tuning and fuel upgrades are a must with this cylinder head. Like all its heads, the 3.5L EcoBoost heads are prototyped and rigorously tested in-house on the flow bench and verified on the dyno prior to digitizing and porting on the 5-axis CNC. The CNC design is verified again prior to production.
To go with both EcoBoost variations, Livernois offers a number of supporting parts. The Powerstorm Head Stud Kit (PN LPP701123), Main Stud Kit (PN LPP701124), and EvenFlo Thermostat (PN LPP 2515-160) are great additions to your 2.3L cylinder head purchase. For the 3.5L, you may want to consider a Powerstorm short-block (PN LPP50101), Head Stud Kit (PN LPP701115), or Billet Oil Pump Gear (PN LPP701141). Livernois offers it own line of Aerospace grade 8740 chromoly fasteners and billet oil pump gears.
The Livernois program for the 5.0L is similar to the smaller EcoBoost, offering a Pro series with stock valves and a Race series with aftermarket valves and valvesprings to accommodate bigger cams. Intake flow is increased by 10%, while a 15% improvement can be seen on the exhaust side. The OE Ford casting is augmented with CNC porting to the chamber and the ports. The Powerstorm Head Stud Kit (PN LPP701113), Billet Oil Pump Gears (PN LPP701126), and Pivoting Timing Chain Guide (PN LPP823129) add-ons make this a one-stop-shop.
The Pivoting Timing Chain Guide seems to be a well-kept Coyote secret in durability and stability. “It eliminates the center mounting point, which can cause cracking and breaking from the factory,” explained Cason Kirkpatrick, who handles marketing for Livernois. “We machine it from billet aluminum and move the mounting points further out so there is less stress on the center. When we do that it moves the tension out from the center and it pushes it across the entire timing chain.”
