PRI 2012: Edelbrock Offers Port-matched Head & Manifold Combos

Edelbrock is making easy on big-block engine builders with who need port-matched head-and-manifold combinations and also those who have ideas on doing their own shaping on the inside of intake manifolds.

The new BV3 (Big Victor) line is a 2-piece, spider-style single-plane intake manifold design that allows easy access to the ports for either hand-grinding or CNC machines. The manifolds are cast in two separate pieces, each with a machined O-ring groove on the mating surfaces to ensure proper sealing when bolted back together.

“There’s no gasket or need for silicone,” says Edelbrock’s director of engineering, Rick Roberts, noting that high-quality bolts and washers are supplied with the manifolds. “But these manifolds can also be ordered CNC port-matched to our line of BV3 cylinder heads.”

The manifolds are offered in two distinct styles: one with a 4500 footprint for a single Dominator-sized carb, or with a huge open plenum upon which different plates can be fabricated for multiple carbs or throttle bodies. Each manifold comes with a matching valley plate that feature integrated coolant passages. The manifolds can be ordered to fit different deck heights and also with standard or thick flanges.

The heads can be port-matched to the unique 2-piece BV3 intake manifold that comes with either a single 4-barrel flange or an open top for custom induction choices. Note how the manifold separates for easy access to the ports.

The manifolds come with matching valley plates that have integrated water passages.

Numerous options will be offered in the port-matched head-manifold line. The Big Victor 3 (BV3) line of heads can be ordered to fit stock GM with 4.84-inch bore spacing, or 5.0-inch bore spacing blocks from CFE, Dart, Sonny’s or Brodix. The heads are also available in raw castings so the engine builder can machine according to needs.

“It’s a game-changing symmetrical valve architecture similar to the DRCE3 Pro Stock architecture,” says Roberts. “But it adapts to a single four-barrel easily.”

With the symmetrical design, the valve centers are rotated around the bore center from conventional configurations. This allows less rocker-arm offset to improve valvetrain stability. The heads can be ordered with either 11- or 14-degree valve angles and 2.50- or 2.56-inch intake valves. Exhaust valves are 1.82-inch.
