Command and Control: PerTronix’s New Digital HP Mobile Ignition Box

PerTronix, founded back in 1962, originally began as a manufacturer of big-rig truck driving and fog lights under the company name Per-Lux. A decade later, an engineer employee pitched the idea of an electronic ignition system to replace the points and condenser in distributors. That pitch would lead to the creation of the Per-Lux Ignitor for truck and industrial engine markets. The Ignitor quickly gained momentum and spread throughout the market.

Quite a few years later, in 1990, Per-Lux sold off the lighting division, and in 1991, Grote International also acquired the Ignition division, before changing the name to PerTronix. This is also when the company began to focus on automotive products, thanks to the ‘90s growth of the performance industry. The Flame-Thrower coil and spark plug wire product lines were introduced, leading to massive growth within the company. Still all these years later, in 2019, PerTronix continues to make waves in the industry.

Drum Roll Please . . .

PerTronix has recently released the newest addition to its product lineup. Introducing the Digital HP Mobile CD Ignition Box! Here’s how it works: you simply order your Digital HP Mobile Ignition Box and download the corresponding application through the Google Play Store or the Apple Store (yes, it is available for both Apple and Android users). Basically, the application acts as the control center for the revolutionary ignition system.

The app connects to the ignition box via Bluetooth wireless technology, and allows you to access and program several features. While the system itself is not new, and has been on the market for several years, the Bluetooth aspect is fresh. Gone are the days of manually accessing the box and adjusting settings – now, it’s as easy as tapping your phone screen.

According to PerTronix, the system was created to work with most vehicles that feature a single coil, which means vehicles with a distributor and almost any number of cylinders. Both even and uneven firing orders are included!

What Are You In Control Of?

The user-friendly application allows you to set three unique rev limits, shift light, start retard, spark settings, and tachometer preferences. Multiple settings can be saved and loaded for easy switching between Street and Strip modes.

The mobile application includes an engine tachometer display, active shift light, and system voltage, operating in real time. Furthering the customization aspect, the app comes preloaded with several selectable dashboard themes to choose from. Drag racing is made just a touch easier with programmable burnout and launch limits.

Additionally, the system includes several security features. Your ignition system can be set into valet mode to reduce the rev limit (no more worrying if your Mustang is being safely driven during dinner), and you can even completely disable starting the vehicle with the touch of a button.

A programmable engine over-rev limit as well as ignition diagnostics are both accessible through the app. The system is 50-State Emissions Legal (CARB E.O. #D-57-37), so even our friends in California can join in the fun.

Additional features include:

  • True Multi-Spark to Red-line
  • Two Voltage Displays
  • Security Selection Button
  • Multiple Power Settings
  • Adjustable Shift Light Output
  • Set & Save All Settings
  • Updateable Firmware
