Motorcycle enthusiasts are getting their first glimpse of a new Victory V-twin engine built to attack the Pikes Peak Hill Climb this summer. The above video shows the team at Roland Sands Design dyno testing and developing fuel maps for the engine, which will face nearly a 5,000-foot elevation change over the 12.42-mile course, ending up at the 14,115 feet summit.
Tabbed Project 156 for the 156 turns on the course, the bike is being built in collaboration with Victory Motorcycles. Generally known for its heavy cruisers, this project could be an indication that Victory may launch a Sport model.
Savvy observers say the engine appears to be an offshoot of the liquid-cooled 1,130cc DOHC V-twin found in the Indian Scout. Both Indian and Victory brands are owned by Polaris. Others say many of the engine components appear to be more production based than custom made; again, providing more fuel to the fire that Victory may expand its line.
Very little information has been released about the engine, but a list of the project’s sponsors offer a few clues. MoTec builds ECUs for electronic fuel injection, and Del West supplies titanium valves. Others to note include fuel system supplier Aeromotive; crank, rod and piston supplier CP Carrillo; and filter supplier K&N.
The Pikes Peak race will be held June 28 following a week-long schedule of practice and qualifying.
