Porsche vehicles have long been known for their performance and driving experience; the impetus for the nameplate’s heritage all starts in the assembly process.
As we see in this video from inside the 911’s engine factory in Zuffenhausen, Germany, the precision skill with which the engines are assembled extends from the craftsmen that are tasked with taking the engines from a bare block to a completed assembly at the other end of the line.Using a combination of human and robotic power, the twin-turbocharged flat-six bullets go from bare to complete in this impressive display of engineering.
Some of the machinery used to accomplish specific tasks, such as the ring compressor that we see when the video opens up, would be a welcome addition to any home shop. Their cost, however, assures that they’ll remain in state-of-the-art assembly facilities like this one.
The precision extends past the robotic assistance to the craftsmen. As we peruse the video, one thing that is immediately noticeable is the precision they display during each segment of the assembly process. No steps are wasted, movements are coordinated so that each action of the engine assembly process is executed quickly and efficiently. And when the machines take over, the process continues without a missed beat. Back and forth the engines go, from warm human interaction to cold robotic programmed assembly, and the end result is an engine for one of the world’s supercars – the Porsche 911 Carrera.
The choreography is impressive to watch, and a fantastic demonstration of engineering and human talent. Then again, they don’t have to deal with stripped bolt holes, rusty fasteners, or damaged components. Enjoy!
