Drifting star Fredric “The Norwegian Hammer” Aasbo runs the Formula D circuit in the 2015 Rockstar Energy/Hankook Tire Scion TC, powered by this impressive 1,000-horse Toyota 2AR four-cylinder engine. In factory form, the 2.5-liter 2AR puts out 180 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 173 pound-feet of torque at 4,100 rpm; great performance for a college kid’s first car, but nowhere near enough power to compete in Formula D’s Pro class.
That’s where Aasbo’s team owner Stephan Papadakis comes into the picture. An accomplished racer in his own right, Papadakis is also the lead engine builder for Papadakis Racing and is responsible for turning that mild-mannered 2AR into a fire-breathing, 1,000 horsepower bullet capable of hustling Aasbo around the track quickly enough to make his mark.
Papadakis uses the factory block as a base, but from there all bets are off as all of the internals are replaced with heavy-duty aftermarket pieces for strength and durability reasons. 10.5:1-compression forged JE pistons work in concert with a forged rotating assembly to handle the power levels. Valvetrain bits are from Supertech Performance, and the cylinder head has been tuned up by industry stalwart Portflow Design.
Speaking of power, the engine is pumped up by a Borg Warner EF-R 8374 turbocharger. Dual TiAL 38mm MV-S wastegates help to control the boost, and a healthy shot of nitrous oxide is onboard for a little bit of extra assistance when necessary.
The whole works is controlled by one of AEM‘s Infinity engine management systems, complete with UEGO gauge controller. AEM also supplied the team with one of their fuel pressure regulators and fuel filters. Speaking of fuel, it’s sprayed through a set of Injector Dynamics’ ID2000 fuel injectors.
In this short–and incredibly well-sh0t–video, Papadakis explains some of the finer points of putting this bullet together, all while the process is sped up to take only one-and-a-half minutes out of your day. In fact, it took you longer to read this that it did to watch the video.
Enjoy!
