Unique 2-stage Turbo Announced for Nissan Titan 5.0L Diesel

A unique 2-stage Holset M2 turbocharger that will provide boost to the new Nissan 5.0-liter V8 diesel was unveiled by Cummins Turbo Technologies recently at the IAA show in Hannover, Germany. The engine will be specific to Nissan’s next-generation Titan pickup.

EngineLabs has previewed this new DOHC oil-burner before but few details have been released. It will have a CGI engine block, aluminum cylinder heads, composite valve covers and Bosch high-pressure common-rail fuel system with piezo injectors. For emissions, the engine will utilize EGR, particulate filter and require diesel exhaust fluid for the SCR system.

This announcement is one of the latest insights into the new engine that will be built at the Cummins plant in Columbus, Indiana. Only one other light-duty consumer pickup offers a diesel engine. The Ram 1500 can be ordered with the 3.0-liter V6 EcoDiesel rated at 240 horsepower with 420 lb-ft peak torque. Cummins says the ISV5.0 engine is capable of over 300 horsepower and mid-500 lb-ft torque. Fuel economy, however, would likely be lower than the EcoDiesel, according to analysts.

Developed at the company’s tech centers in Indiana and England, the technology offers a flexible architecture that integrates two turbochargers in series. Using Rotary Turbine Control, the exhaust is channeled to required areas to facilitate four main operating modes:

  • High Pressure Two-Stage Turbo Mode – Minimizes turbo lag and enables a better vehicle transient performance.
  • Low Pressure Single Stage Turbo Mode – Enables higher power performance while ensuring smooth transparent mode transition without impacting vehicle driveability
  • Wastegate Mode – Maximizes engine power output
  • Regen Mode – Optimized aftertreatment operating conditions for emissions control

“Nissan will be the first to benefit from this pioneering integrated technology, which delivers high efficiency, excellent driveability and the low emissions levels required in North America and Europe,” says Jonathon Wood, executive director of research and engineering at Cummins Turbo Technologies.
