Future Nissan Titan to Wear Cummins Badge

Cummins will supply a 5.0-liter turbo diesel to the next-generation Nissan Titan.

The announcement was made today during Nissan 360, an industry showcase of Nissan’s global product and technology.

“The fact that we’ve been working on this together for a period of time, we’ve had the time to really do it right,” says Cummins vice president Ric Kleine.

Officials say the new engine is currently in the latter stages of development and testing. Cummins will also offer a version of the engine to commercial-vehicle customers.

“We’re going to be the only ones to have a V8 diesel in a 1500 truck, which is a pretty neat space to play in because you’re actually going to be more powerful and bigger and have more capability than a 1500 but not quite at the level of a 2500,” says Fred Diaz, Nissan’s VP for sales and marketing.

The engine will be built at the Cummins plant in Columbus, Indiana, but no further information was offered.

Diesels for light-duty pickups have been pondered for the last 10 years as gas prices became so volatile. Ram has already introduced a VM Motori-built V6 EcoDiesel with 420 lb-ft torque for the 2014 Ram 1500. Ram, of course, also has a Cummins 6.7-liter inline-6 in its 2500 and 3500 trucks. Although it’s not for the American F-150 pickup line, yet, Ford offers a 3.2-liter Power Stroke inline-5 diesel in the Transit, and it’s also used in the foreign-market Rangers.

The Ram 3.0-liter diesel is rated at 240 horsepower with 420 lb-ft torque. A 5.0-liter V8 diesel should be rated higher but not closer to the engine in the Big 3 HD trucks. The Ram Cummins engine is tops with 850 lb-ft peak torque while the GM Duramax is rated at 765 lb-ft and the Ford 6.7-liter Power Sroke is rated at 800 lb-ft.
