Last year at SEMA, GM showed off the first Connect and Cruise Crate Powertrain system in a 1970 Chevelle built with Dale Earnhardt Jr. (below) The supercharged LSA engine was matched with a 4L85 transmission and tied together with a dedicated ECU and wiring harness.

Chevrolet will again have its popular Shop Talk garage experience at the 2012 SEMA Show, which kicks off October 30 in Las Vegas. There will be four bays of activities, including two devoted to engines.

The Crate Powertrain System section will include engines, transmissions and controllers from Chevrolet Performance. Also on display will be a crate powertrain system installed on the open chassis of a 1988 Monte Carlo SS. The Build Your Own Crate Engine section will feature mechanics assembling a supercharged LS9 crate engine. This action will simulate what happens when customers purchase the “Build Your Own Crate Engine” option with an LS7 or LS9 engine from Chevrolet Performance.

“Chevrolet Performance is the direct line from the factory for performance and personalization parts, and the SEMA Show gives us the chance to show everything our engineers have been working on,” says Jim Campbell, vice president for performance vehicles and motorsports at GM.

Another bay will feature accessories for performance vehicles like the Camaro, and there will also be a bay to showcase accessories and performance items for the Sonic.

As usual, Chevy will bring a number of vehicles to SEMA. Some of the early ones already announced include a 2.0-liter turbocharged Malibu concept, an Impala concept and a host of small cars like the Spark, Sonic and Cruze. Officials say they’re keeping the Camaro and Corvette show cars under wraps until the festivities begin in Las Vegas.

EngineLabs will be at the SEMA Show all week to bring you updates on all the new engine products.
