H&H Flatheads Current Build: 284 Stroker Flathead

Mike Herman and H&H Flatheads [2] in La Cresenta, California, specialize in building Flatheads — and the more unique and challenging the project, the more excited they get before spinning the wrenches. The company’s recent engine builds include a half dozen blown V12 Lincoln L-head engines, which certainly qualifies as “things you don’t see everyday.”

Herman is also showing off a trophy-worthy 284 stroker flathead with a modern twist.

“We built this engine for a customer in Colorado,” explains Herman. “We’ll build any type of flathead for anyone, and after talking with the customer, decided on this stroker combination.”

At the heart of the stroked out Flattie is a 4.125-inch SCAT [3] crankshaft with SCAT H-beam rods. The SCAT rotating assemblies are very popular with the flathead crowd, as SCAT is one of the few companies still manufacturing internals for the 70-year old engines. Capped off with 3 5/16-inch Ross [4] pistons, the rotating assembly combination promises more life and dependability than Henry Ford ever thought possible when these “bent Henrys” rolled off the assembly line.

On the top end are Navarro [6] cylinder heads, Navarro intake and three Stromberg [7] 97 carburetors. A Mallory [8] dual-point ignition system provides the spark.

The last detail shared by Herman is the electrical system. Driven by a PowerMaster [9] alternator that is offset to the driver’s side of the engine to accommodate the triple carb setup, the flathead stroker is packing more punch than the original 6-volt power supply.

H&H Flatheads calls this combination its Stage 3 High Performance Kit, and it’s available in either 276ci or 284ci versions.

This stroker Flathead lives up to the H&H Flatheads motto: Combining the likes of old time nostalgia with today’s technology and durability. For more information on H&H Flatheads and their engine shop and services, visit them at flatheads-forever. [10]
