Update: Screenshots from the SRT website show exploded views of the engine and reveal a twin-screw supercharger with intercoolers mounted on each side of the intake.
Although not releasing final horsepower numbers, Dodge today unveiled the 2015 Challenger SRT with the new supercharged Hellcat Hemi engine.
The news release simply said “600-plus horsepower” when describing the 6.2-liter bullet, noting that it’s the most powerful V8 engine the Chrysler Group has ever produced. The Challenger SRT will also be available with a standard 392 Hemi delivering 485 horsepower and 475 lb-ft peak torque.
The Hellcat is Dodge’s first attempt at a blown engine, following in the footsteps of the 662-horsepower 5.8-liter Mustang Shelby GT500 and 580 horsepower 6.2-liter ZL1 Camaro — both supercharged.
To accommodate that power, Dodge outfitted the big Hemi with a forged-steel crankshaft that features induction-hardened bearing surfaces. Dodge says the crank is “so well engineered it can withstand firing pressures of 110 bar (1,595 psi).” Also, Dodge swapped on a new “specially tuned” damper that’s been tested to 13,000 rpm.
Other tricks on the engine include forged pistons that were developed using advanced telemetry measurement, powder-forged connecting rods and DLC piston pins.
Dodge hasn’t released other information on the new induction system or upgrades to the engine management — other than to say that the Challenger will come with two key fobs. The black fob is normal driving and the red is the only way to “unlock the full horsepower and torque potential” of the engine.
The automaker did say the Challenger comes with a low restriction air-intake system, and the exhaust will be “active,” that is, less backpressure as the driver leans into the throtle.
EngineLabs will have more on the new Hellcat as information becomes available. An earlier preview story has additional links to spy photos of the engine. (click on any image below for a full-size view)
