Ferrea Racing Components’ Lightweight Rocker Arms For K20 Engines

Whether you consider yourself a Honda fan or not, there is no denying the absolutely awesome engineering of the K-series engines. By building such an impressive platform, Honda has given the aftermarket a platform that is not only robust in factory form, but one that takes to modification incredibly well. Thanks to the square 86.0mm (3.386 inches) bore and stroke, the K20 is the rev-happy variant of the K-series, with a rev limit from the factory in excess of 8,000 rpm on some models. With aftermarket rocker arms, that number can increase significantly.

As such, Ferrea Racing Components looked at how they could not only lessen the stresses of the valvetrain at such elevated RPM, but also improve performance over the factory design. What they came up with is the RR1004 roller rocker assembly. Made from a 70-series aluminum-magnesium alloy, the RR1004 replaces the steel rocker arm assembly, directly. By using the semi-exotic alloy, the weight of the system is reduced by over half, even with the steel tappet nut and adjuster screw assembly.

The rocker arm assembly is fully CNC-machined not only for perfectly repeatable production, but also to allow a design that maximizes the strength of the rocker arm, while removing every bit of non-essential material possible. In addition to reducing maas, the design reduces rocker arm deflection under load, along with reducing mass moment of inertia, while increasing overall durability.

The rocker design also eliminates the VTEC variable valve timing system and, as you might notice from the single roller bearing, only utilizes the larger center camshaft lobe, which is the largest in terms of lift. If you’re looking for even more RPM than the standard valvetrain offers, these rocker arms are capable of 11,000 rpm when paired with the right camshaft grind. While these rocker arms aren’t inexpensive, when you consider the design and materials involved, as well as the stresses you are putting on the valvetrain as you approach the five-digit RPM range, they are cheap insurance.

The gold rocker arm color indicates these are the second-generation rocker arm design. The original design features a blue anodized rocker arm. A red rocker arm signifies that the part is designed for B- or H-series engines.
