PRI 2025: Sunoco EPX Is The New Oxygenated King For Boost

It is impressive to see how quickly the performance world has adopted ethanol. What used to be seen as a nuisance fuel is now the go-to solution for making big power on a budget. However, pump E85 has a major flaw: inconsistency. The percentage of ethanol can vary dramatically from station to station and season to season. To solve this, Sunoco has expanded its ethanol lineup at PRI 2025 with the release of Sunoco EPX.

Sunoco is unique because they distill their own ethanol and manufacture their fuels in-house in Pennsylvania. This gives them total control over the final product. While their existing E85-R offers a stable 99-octane rating for about $86 a pail, the new Sunoco EPX is designed for builds that need even more headroom. It is the next step up the ladder for racers running extreme boost pressures.

The technical specs on Sunoco EPX are aggressive. It pushes beyond the standard 85-percent ethanol content and features a massive increase in oxygenation. The oxygen content sits at 34 percent, which lowers the stoichiometric air-fuel ratio to 9.4:1. While it does not have a standard octane rating due to the chemistry, it is built specifically to support elevated boost levels.

This fills a gap in the market that was previously occupied by home-brewed blends or inconsistent pump gas. Sunoco previously released E30-R for setups that could not support full E85 volume, but Sunoco EPX goes the other direction, targeting maximum performance. Heavy hitters in the industry, including Pennsylvania-based Evolution Performance, have already been running this fuel in high-horsepower S650s and GT500s. If your setup is maxing out the capabilities of standard E85, this high-oxygen blend is the answer.
