SEMA 2018: Mopar’s 1,000-Horsepower Gen III Hemi “Hellephant” Engine

It’s no surprise that OEM’s across the board are getting into the modern crate engine business. It’s been a longstanding tradition that the performance parts divisions offered performance versions of the manufacturer’s most popular powerplants, ready-to-go for the end user. However, what is surprising is that an OEM – Mopar, in this case – is offering a crate engine making 1,000 horsepower straight out of the box.

Dubbed the “Hellephant”, Mopar’s latest offering is the largest and most powerful Gen III crate engine ever built by the brand, and is the first OEM offering to break into the four-digit horsepower arena. Its iconic 426 cubic-inches of displacement comes via a 4.125-inch bore and 4.0-inch stroke, and the massive airflow needed to feed the beast comes thanks to an improved 3.0-liter positive-displacement supercharger.

“Our enthusiasts crave power and performance and our new ‘Hellephant’ Mopar crate engine and kit deliver huge horsepower and torque in a plug-and-play package that is unique in the industry,” said Steve Beahm, Head of Parts & Service For Mopar.

While prices are still being calculated for the Hellephant engine and the Hellephant Kit, the kit’s components have been finalized and are quite extensive. Never has 1,000 horsepower from a modern supercharged powerplant been so turn-key.

The engine assembly comes with everything the engine needs to run, including the water pump, oil pan, flywheel, supercharger and throttle body, fuel injectors, and coil packs. If you’re looking for a plug-and-play kit to control the engine, Mopar has that covered, as well.

The Hellephant Engine Kit consists of a PCM, power distribution center, engine harness, chassis harness, accelerator pedal assembly, oxygen and air temperature sensors, fuel pump control module and CAN-BUS interface. The included PCM comes pre-calibrated for 1,000 horsepower and 950 lb-ft of torque.

Additionally, Mopar will be offering a Front End Accessory Drive kit, which will include an alternator, power steering pump, belts, and required accessory pulleys for a street car installation.
