Detuned V10 Crate Engine Showcased in SEMA Charger

Mopar has stuffed a detuned version of its V10 crate engine into a late-model Dodge Charger for the upcoming SEMA Show. Normally pumping out 800 horsepower, the 8.4-liter V10 is now at a “venom-worthy boost of 650 horsepower,” according to a Mopar news release. The detuning allows the engine to “remain eco friendly” with reduced emissions.

No word on how Mopar detuned the engine. The 800-horsepower version, which lists for nearly $40,000, has a 12.5:1 compression ratio, so a little less compression to make the engine more streetable on pump gas is a likely possibility. Also, the JTEC controller has probably been reprogrammed with milder manners.

Called the Charger Juiced, the car is one of 24 “Moparized” vehicles that the Chrysler Group will take to SEMA later this month. The Charger has been modified with a unique hood and front spoiler, metallic Copperhead paint, 20-inch wheels and Katzkin leather interior.

The V10 competition crate engine was introduced at last year’s SEMA show. Basically designed for drag racing, the engine is rated at 800 horsepower and 695 lb-ft peak torque. All engines are hand assembled, internally balanced and dyno tested.
