How Forged And Billet Pistons Take Shape At The RaceTec Facility

During our visit to the RaceTec facility, we saw how raw metal becomes high-performance engine hardware. If you are curious about what happens in the shop, here is a quick look at internal combustion manufacturing.

Squeezing Metal Under Massive Hydraulic Pressure

Forged pistons start as thick aluminum blocks before heavy industrial tooling applies immense force. This aggressive pressing action compresses the heated metal into dedicated dies, creating the basic piston silhouette and establishing dense grain alignment across the crown.

Next, technicians transfer these shaped forgings directly to automated CNC milling centers. High-speed carbide cutters carve the ring lands, pin bores, and dome contours, turning the pressed blank into a precision component ready to withstand brutal cylinder pressure.

Machining Billet Pistons Inside The RaceTec Facility

Billet pistons offer an entirely different approach to high-performance piston construction. Instead of pressing heated metal inside a pre-shaped die, technicians start with a simple length of extruded round bar stock.

This unique method leaves zero forging patterns or stamped structural outlines on the metal alloy. Every single angle, skirt taper, and combustion bowl comes directly from subtractive cutting tools, removing raw material one precise pass at a time.

Cutting Unique Features From Zero-Percent Blanks

Machinists call this raw bar stock a zero-percent piston because the metal contains no molded geometry before the sharp cutting bits strike the surface. Spinning carbide end mills strip away unwanted aluminum, gradually exposing the intricate interior webbing and thick wrist pin supports.

This subtractive process allows manufacturers to produce completely custom dimensions without investing in expensive forging tooling. As a result, racers order unique crown designs, custom ring packages, and specific compression heights tailored for rare cylinder head configurations.

Touring the RaceTec facility gave us a behind-the-scenes look at how they produce some of their products. We watched solid aluminum blanks turn into dependable rotating assemblies that survive severe mechanical abuse on the dragstrip.
