Hearing a powerful American eight-cylinder engine roar to life always brings a special kind of joy to any true driving enthusiast. General Motors (GM) recently gave performance purists another massive reason to celebrate by officially announcing that the highly anticipated new LS6 V8 will be produced at its historic Flint assembly facility. While the impressive performance numbers of this modern powerplant are a given, the fact that it will be bolted together in the exact same location that birthed the iconic Chevy small-block adds serious fuel to the fire.
GM first built a small-block at this historic Michigan manufacturing plant back in July 1954 to power the classic ’55 Corvette. Over the following decades, the dedicated local assembly crew produced more than 40 million engines before shifting its production focus in 1999. While it is an incredible modern mechanical marvel, this fresh powerplant features a traditional overhead-valve design that traces its conceptual roots all the way back to an original Buick patent from 1904. It makes perfect sense to bring the assembly process back to the absolute birthplace of American performance.
Today, the Bowtie brand honors that deep automotive heritage with an absolute monster of a modern engine. The new LS6 V8 displaces 409 ci and generates a massive 535 horsepower alongside 520 lb-ft of torque. The engineering team achieved this perfect combination of high power output and great efficiency by utilizing a healthy 13.0:1 compression ratio. Plant Operations Director Paul Tanis proudly noted that the team is incredibly excited to bring assembly back home to Flint. Assistant Chief Engineer Mike Kociba added that the engineering team is heavily leaning into its history with a big-displacement and high-compression design.
