Anyone who’s ever worked with hard fluid lines knows the difficulty of getting the flares just right, and our friends over at Koul Tools have developed a solution to make the process much simpler and more effective. Brake lines, wastegate lines, fuel lines, or any other hard line that requires a tight seal is a candidate to use this new tool, called the SurSeat Line Lapping Tool.
It’s designed to be used on both 37-degree and 45-degree hard line junctions, and follows the same principles that are used to ensure a tight seal on engine valves. When a flare is made on a piece of hard tubing, there are always imperfections in the material due to the spreading of the metal, and this is where the SurSeat comes into the picture.
The diamond-dust-embedded tool laps and grinds the surface of the flare, ensuring that the flare’s surface is smooth and imperfection-free, ensuring a tight seal when the fitting is tightened down. It even works on previously-made flares that have developed a leak – just use the tool to clean those up, re-tighten the fitting, and away you go.
Koul Tools founder Dick Raczuk says that there have been no leaks evident during any of the company’s testing.
The tool is elegant in its simplicity – it clamps into a vise to provide the user with a solid base for the grinding process, the flared line is placed into the end opposite the grinding wheel, and with a few turns of the CNC-machined hand-crank, the imperfections in the hard line are removed and the end of the tubing is polished to perfection. As with the rest of Koul Tools lineup, the SurSeat is designed from the outset to provide a lifetime of use.
