Toyota’s Global Race Engine Part of Yaris Hybrid-R Concept

Building off the success of its TS030 Le Mans prototype, German racecar builder Toyota Motorsport GmbH (TMG) — which formerly handled the development of Toyota’s Formula 1 team, has designed a 400-plus-horsepower powertrain for the Yaris Hybrid-R concept vehicle that will debut at the Frankfurt Auto Show next month.

The goal is to demonstrate the technology learned from the TS030’s success, winning WEC races in three countries last year and earning Powertrain Innovation of the Year honors at the 2012 Professional Motorsport World Expo. That setup included a 530-horsepower 3.4-liter naturally aspirated V8 teamed with 300-horsepower Denso hybrid motor located in the 6-speed gearbox. Instead of using batteries, the team opted for a Nisshinbo supercapacitor to store energy recovered from the car’s regenerative braking system.

Again, a supercapacitor used on the Yaris to power two electric motors, one for each rear wheel and each worth about 60 horsepower. Driving the front wheels is a 1.6-liter turbocharged, direct-injected 4-cylinder engine based off TMG’s new Global Race Engine. That engine architecture is designed to compete in various motorsports around the world, including WRC and WTCC. Peak torque as shown on the dyno is around 309 lb-ft.

The unique drivetrain arrangement allows for advanced traction control during acceleration and torque vectoring for faster speeds in the turns.
