There’s still time to nominate your favorite engine builder for the 2015 Performance Engine Builder of the Year. The winner will be announced at this year’s PRI Show in Indianapolis.

The deadline for submitting a nomination is September 30. This is the fourth year that Engine Builder magazine and Federal Mogul’s Speed-Pro Powerforged pistons have sponsored the award. Past winners include Ed Pink Racing Engines, Kroyer Racing Engines and NVR Racing.

Last year’s winner was Tom Nickerson, right, of NVR Racing in Butler, Wisconsin.

“We’ve gotten about 30 entries a year since we started the program,” says editor/publisher Doug Kaufman. “It climbs a little each year, but we keep trying to up that number.”

Those wishing to nominate an engine builder can go to this website and fill out the entry form. All that’s required at first is basic information about the builder and the shop along with a 300-word essay on why you think that builder deserves the award. Engine builders can nominate their own shop.

“We and Federal-Mogul are looking for the best example of creativity and innovation, training and education, merchandising and promotion, professional standards and conduct, appearance, solid business management, community involvement, business growth, achievement and victories,” explains Kaufman.

Nominations for the Performance Engine Builder of the Year close at the end of September.

The entrants will be reviewed and narrowed down to a group of semi-finalists. Additional information will then be requested and a panel of judges drawn from the Engine Buider staff and sponsor representatives will select the three finalists and eventually the winner. Grand prize is $1,000 along with an Apple iPad, three nights stay at PRI and feature story in the magazine. Additional gifts include Speed-Pro counter stools and jacket, mechanics gloves and a product voucher for $2,500 in Speed-Pro Powerforged pistons. Second- and third-place finishers receive a trophy, Kindle Fire, gloves and vouchers for $1,500 of Speed-Pro product.

“This isn’t a contest designed for the casual engine fan, or even the enthusiast building a race engine in his garage,” sums up Kaufman. “This is a chance to celebrate the often-overlooked unsung hero. The guy whose efforts, expertise and innovation matter, without whom the winning racer would just be a back marker.”
