Video: Ken Dutweiler and Vortech Dyno A Stock Coyote With A V-3 Si

Engine guru Ken Duttweiler.

By now, most of us have seen dyno numbers from a variety of Coyote equipped Mustangs that run a Vortech supercharger under the hood. We’ve even done our own testing with one of these systems.

Recently, Vortech received a call from legendary engine builder Ken Duttweiler who was curious to see what a stock V-3 Si system was capable of on a stock Coyote engine. We don’t know if Dutweiler was simply curious, or more likely we’d suspect that he’s conducting his own research for an engine project.

Aside from a set of JBA shorty headers, this Coyote is completely stock, the same as one that would sit between the fenders of any 2014 Mustang GT. The Vortech V-3 Si system was also straight out of the box, utilizing the stock pulley, the “canned” 91 octane tune that comes with the supercharger, and even a stock Mustang GT air box to breath through.

We love to hear Coyote engines howling on the dyno, and this one was no exception, with the throttle staying wide open until 6,800 RPM. Duttweiler baselined this engine without the supercharger at 449.3 hp and 341.1 ft-lbs torque. When it was all said and done the engine made 641.3 hp and 493.3 ft-lbs torque at 6,800, a gain of 192 hp and 152.2 ft-lbs torque. These gains were made with out of the box V-3 Si system running 8.85 psi on a canned, not custom tune.

A couple of interesting notes, the first being the Coyote’s power stock. The JBA headers no doubt had add something to the picture, however these are still smog legal headers. We have to wonder if this doesn’t prove that the Coyote loves better exhaust, and that it may in fact be a little underrated from the factory.

The second interesting point is torque under the curve, before the peak. This is where the engine spends most of its time, making these numbers perhaps more important than the final peak numbers. While equipped with the Vortech the engine made over 400 ft-lbs of torque at 3,200 RPM, that number climbs to over 500 ft-lbs at 4,300 and stays there until right at the end of the 6,800 RPM dyno pull. This shows that centrifugal supercharger systems do make great mid-range torque and maintain torque well on a Coyote engine.
