Prime The Pump: Priming Your Oil System With Peterson Fluid Systems

The oiling system of a high-performance engine has the critical job of making sure all parts have the correct about of lubrication at all times when the engine is running, but what about before you hit the ignition? Dry starts can damage an engine where tolerances are tight, so using a primer in your oiling system can help alleviate those problems and keep your engine oiled properly at all times.

Adding a primer to your oil system is fairly easy when you use one like the Primer Remote Filter Mount from Peterson Fluid Systems. This unit combines the ability to remotely mount your oil filter and add the primer into a location of your choosing under the hood. These units are extremely versatile and can be used in both a dry sump and a wet sump oil system. The only difference between this and the standard remote oil filter housing is the addition of a line that runs to either the oil pan or the sump tank depending on the system, along with a feeder line to the primer.

According to Pat Haberkon from Peterson, these Primer Remote Filter Mounts are a great addition to any high-performance engine combination.

“This is a great fit for an engine that that has a lot of spring pressure or high amounts of rocker arm ratio where the pushrods are under a lot of stress are. Priming the system allows the pushrod tips to stay in the motor and it eliminates dry starts. These units are all about convenience for a racer. It makes things much simpler to mount this unit somewhere where it’s acceptable, rather than trying to get to something that’s buried in the plumbing or under a car. It will help the engine perform better and live longer with the additional oiling it provides.”

The Primer Remote Filter Mount uses the same twisted four-lobe rotor that’s in all of their oil pumps and can provide 20 psi of oil pressure in less than 10 seconds. Each unit is made of billet aluminum and can be rebuilt at home with an O-ring kit and some seals available through Peterson when it’s time to perform service.
