BorgWarner Turbocharger Trivia, Did You Know?

BW_S300sx3

BorgWarner has been a leader in the turbocharging industry for a long time. In the mid to late 90’s, they started becoming the trend setter. Today, they are a leading manufacturer of turbochargers for OEM’s and the “800 pound gorilla” in the diesel market. Many of the leading turbocharger manufacturers actually start with a base BorgWarner turbo and then do their magic to it to create their product line.

BW_S400SX3 67MMDid you know that the “S” in front of the name (S300, S400, S500, etc) refers to Schwitzer?

BorgWarner acquired Kuhlman Corporation in 1999 which gave them access to the Schwitzer brand. Little did they know 10 years later, the S series chargers would be as popular as they are in the diesel performance market. In fact, the popularity is continuing to grow without an end in site!

Do you know what the “K” in their other line of turbochargers stands for? (i.e. K29, K31, etc)

The K is in reference to the 3K-Warner brand. The 3K-Warner brand used to be AG Kühnle, Kopp & Kausch. When BorgWarner acquired them in 1998, they changed their name.

Do you know when the S400SX line officially came to be and why?

It was in 2004 when GM and BorgWarner came together to go racing! GM had recently introduced the Cobalt and they wanted to go drag racing. By the end of the 2005 racing season, they managed to take the Cobalt drag car further than any front wheel drive vehicle had ever been. They set world records for the fastest and quickest (7.292 at 201.61mph) and they were the first into the 200mph club. The “X” on the end of the name (S400SX) refers to the unique motorsports DNA the charger has. Today, you will find a number of different “SX” models including the S200SX, S300SX3, S400SX3 and S400SX4 to name a few of the more popular units.

These units feature a number of special features like integrated BOV, Gamma-Ti turbine wheels, Forged Milled Compressor Wheels, Dual Ceramic Bearings, huge wastegated turbine housings and many, many more features!
