Every SEMA project vehicle is tasked with attracting attention to the products attached to it. In the case of this striking Focus RS built by Full Race Motorsports, it definitely worked on us. The company took an aggressive approach to modding the hardware under all those visual accents.

If you aren’t up to speed on Full Race, the company began tweaking turbocharged imports, but added Ford EcoBoost engines to its repertoire while Ford was still developing the platform. After Ford’s testing validated the efficacy of the Full Race prototype products, the company jumped into EcoBoost tuning and built a string of SEMA projects, including an F-150, a Focus ST, a Fusion, and an EcoBoost Mustang.

The company offers a full line of EcoBoost performance upgrades from intercoolers to complete turbo-upgrade kits.

This year the company was selected to build a 2017 Focus RS for the show and company founder Geoff Raicer pulled out all the stops.

This is our game. We don’t do V-8s

“The theme for this was just all-out, everything you can modify on a Focus RS at this time,” he said. “Fortunately for us, we have a lot of experience modifying small-displacement, four-cylinder engines. It’s all we have done for the last 15 years. This is our game. We don’t do V-8s.”

The Full Race game is definitely strong, as  Geoff didn’t just add bolt-on upgrades; he opted for a built engine, a bigger turbo and more.

“The School of Automotive Machinists fully built a short-block for us using Manley rods, JE Pistons, and King Bearings,” he said. “They modified the oil pump, and we got a head that was fully prepped by Head Games Motorworks using Ferrea valvetrain and some prototype GSC billet cams. We have a PPG transmission and we are just going all out to see what this thing is capable of.”

All told, the results are quite impressive and after the show is over Geoff plans to see just how high he can turn up the heat on this hatch.

“It will do 470 at the wheels and it completely runs out of fuel, so that is the ragged edge. So what we do is back it down to 450 and it’s safe, but what is really cool about that is you are doing that on stock injectors, stock fuel pump and stock clutch. It holds it, but we want more than that. We want to run ethanol, crank the boost to 44 psi and really push the limits of what this car is capable of, but it requires a fueling solution. Vaughn Gittin Jr. and Mustang RTR has an awesome high-pressure fuel pump and Nostrum Energy has a nice set of injectors, so we are going to take that new-school, DI fuel system and max it out.”

As you might expect from its long line of SEMA projects, Full Race is ready to max out most any performance-oriented EcoBoost application, including the 2.3-liter Mustang. As such, the company not only had an RS in Ford’s SEMA booth, but an engine with its turbo kit in the Borg-Warner booth.

“This is our 2015+ Mustang EcoBoost turbo kit. It fits the 2.3-liter EcoBoost engine and it has a very unique exhaust manifold. It’s called a tri-port integrated exhaust manifold. It took about a year and a half to develop this kit so we could retain the twin-scroll system,” Geoff explained. “Twin-scroll makes the turbo spool quickly and gives you excellent starting torque. Combine that with the BorgWarner EFR turbos, which are response-based and the results are truly something that rivals a V8.”

Because of the kit’s flexible design, you can rival a V8 or embarrass it, as the Full Race kit will accept a wide range of turbos to meet your power needs.

The Full Race turbo kits are based on Borg-Warner’s quick spooling EFR turbos, and it is flexible enough to accept EFR units that deliver the boost to support 300 to 1,000 horsepower.

“This kit will actually fit any size turbo from a 300-horse EFR all the way up to an 800-plus-horsepower EFR, depending on what your goals are and what your engine modifications are,” Geoff added. “The smallest turbo that we would recommend is called the EFR 7163. That is something that will max out around 450 at the wheels, but still spool like stock or maybe even quicker than stock. On the far end of the spectrum, we will have the new EFR280, which is actually a true 1,100-horsepower-capable turbo…”

For those that already have upgrades, like a larger intercooler, the base Full Race EcoBoost Mustang turbo kit starts at $3,500, while stepping up to the complete kit will run you around $6,000.
