SEMA 2018: Royal Purple’s Products Cover The Automotive Spectrum

When it comes to engine oil, the name Royal Purple is one that most enthusiasts will recognize. However, what a lot of enthusiasts aren’t really aware of, is that under the Royal Purple umbrella are several different lines of oil, ranging from factory-certified OEM-compliant oil, to high-performance street oil, all the way to race-only oil.

“We offer multiple lines of oil to meet different demands,” says Christopher Barker, Royal Purple’s Technical Services Department Manager. “Our API-licensed line of oil is warranty-compliant for new cars. This is what you’ll see in most retail auto stores.” That API certification basically limits what the Royal Purple chemists are allowed to do.

“There is only so much we can do with an API formulation and still keep it licensed. We can’t put our proprietary chemistry in it and the amount of anti-wear we can put in is limited. It’s a chemistry-restricted oil,” Barker explains. “We offer the best performance within that box they give us, but there’s only so much we’re allowed to do.”

Once you get away from that API certification, the Royal Purple chemists are essentially “weapons-free” and can alter the chemistry of the oil however they see fit in their HPS and XPR lines of street and race oil, respectively. “We can put whatever we want in these formulas. Our HPS street oil has a larger amount of anti-wear additives, along with our proprietary Synerlec additive. Both of those combined are going to give your engine more protection than any other engine oil can,” Barker says.

In addition to oil, Royal Purple has a complete lineup of automotive chemicals designed to do everything from raise the boiling point of water to stabilize fuel.

That advanced chemistry has a number of benefits, according to Barker. “Because of the way the additives interact with the metal surfaces, they increase the efficiency of the engine. You’ll see more power and better economy out of the engine, as those are different sides of the same coin,” says Barker. “While the power increase is slight, it is measurable on the dyno.”

In addition to their lineup of oils, Royal Purple also has a number of other automotive chemicals designed to improve the performance of your engine. “Our MaxClean additive is a fuel system treatment which will clean everything it touches,” Barker says. “So, not only does it clean the injectors or carburetor, but the valves, piston crowns, and combustion chambers. It’s also a fuel stabilizer, so when used in a car that doesn’t get used as much, or put away for the winter, it keeps the fuel from going bad.”
