If you didn’t have a go-kart as a kid, or a friend with one that was available to rip around the neighborhood, then you missed out on some serious fun in your childhood. We suspect most of you gearheads reading this had some portion of your bond with all things mechanical sped up by an experience with a go-kart.
Rip-snortin’ fun, they were. Often built with repurposed lawnmower engines and carburetors that needed a serious working-over every time you wanted to ride the darn thing – not to mention how often the spark plugs went south.
And some of us never grew up, like the owner of this particular engine. He hooks us up with a time-lapse of the Kohler XKE engine teardown and rebuild from his go-kart. Not only does he rebuild it in two minutes and fifty seconds, he also manages to port and polish the assembly, all under the watchful eye of his supervisor.
We remember rebuilding an engine like this back in the day, but we didn’t have nearly the clean-room assembly tactics employed here. Yet the engine still ran, and managed to scare all of the neighbors in the process as we flew around corners, wide-eyed and with a big smile.
With fresh tires and an engine running at peak performance, this thing will have the neighbors hatin’ life.
