Ever wanted to create a coffee table based around an engine block, but weren’t sure how to go about the process? Then this video is right in the wheelhouse. Furniture is subjective – what appeals to one person may not appeal to another, and that’s especially the case for most gearheads. But this particular instance shows off a sweet LED-lighted engine block coffee table and the build process required to create it.
While a big-block Cadillac V8 might not be the platform of choice for most, the process can be replicated using any old V8 engine block found in the scrapyard. Of course, the table would be much more attractive when built from a Ford 427 SOHC block or big-block 409 Chevy base, but regardless, an engine block coffee table is sure to be a conversation piece in any living room. Until it’s time to move it, of course.
An important step in the process is the cleaning of both the block and piston/rod assemblies, as nobody wants old oil leaking all over the hardwood floor or fresh tan carpet, and the ingenuity of the bearing caps flipped over and mounted to the oil pan rail for the table’s feet is especially impressive, along with the adjusters to level the table upon final installation.
The fact that the block was not modified in any way, and in fact could be re-used in a future build, also shows a solid appreciation for the hot-rodding tradition.
It’s a fun winter project that can be accomplished by anyone with regular old mechanic’s tools, a bit of time, and some innovation. The builder also has contact information in the video if you want him to fab one up for you. Enjoy!
