We’ve written about Elio Motors‘ prototype three-cylinder engine previously; the company has progressed in the development stages to running the engine on the dyno.
Today they have the unveiling of the engine, as you can see from the video above. The engine has a goal of reaching the impressive 84 mpg threshold with a top speed of more than 100 mph, to be released in a three-wheeled enclosed vehicle that will retail for $6,800. Should the company be successful, the goal of owning a brand-new vehicle may become a reality for population segments who previously were unable to do so. Engine developer IAV designed the all-new engine that was developed specifically for Elio’s use.
“We are literally trying to reinvent the auto industry, so why go the conventional route and rework someone else’s engine?” said Paul Elio, President and CEO of Elio Motors. “There really was nothing available that combined the speed and power that we want and our customers deserve. IAV came through with an outstanding execution of today’s best technology that will be a cornerstone to delivering a world-class vehicle.”
Engine testing centered around efficiency goals in both low- and high-load situations, ensuring that the engine is capable of performance both on the highway and in the stop-and-go traffic owners will encounter during city driving.
“We are extremely pleased with our first run on the dynamometer,” Elio said. “Seeing this new technology come to fruition has been one of the most exciting stages in our history. This prototype puts us right where we need to be at this stage of development.”
Currently the company says that more than 40,000 people have reserved a spot in line to purchase one of these unique vehicles after they enter production, which will take place at a former GM facility in Shreveport, Louisiana. The vehicle will be built in a partnership between Elio Motors and their manufacturing parts, Comau.
Sounds darned healthy for a three-cylinder, doesn’t it?
