Video: 828 Cubic-Inch Ford Mountain Motor Belts Out Torque For Days

mountainThese days just about any engine displacing more than five liters, or 302 cubic inches is considered to be “big.” As far as production motors go, the 6.4 liter HEMI V8 found in Chrysler’s SRT8 Charger and Challenger are about as big as you can get from a major automaker, unless you take the step up to the 8.4 liter, V10 SRT Viper. 8.4 liters works out to about 512 cubic-inches, in case you were wondering.

But as big as the Viper’s V10 engine is, it’s nothing compared to this massive 828 cubic-inch Ford motor. On the dyno for some testing and tuning, this engine is built to compete in the mountain motor pro stock class of the IHRA, where 2,000+ horsepower without nitrous or forced induction is the norm, reports Bangshift.

These incredible engines don’t just displace a small village though; they are built to run at 9,000+ RPM, spitting out the kind of torque and horsepower numbers you normally need dual massive turbochargers for. But this is an all-motor situation, relying entirely on displacement to make the kind of power that propels drag racers down the quarter-mile in six seconds or less.

Built by Innovators West, hearing this engine run on the dyno is as close as most of us will get to being in the driver’s seat behind one of these engines. The sheer physics that goes into a motor like this is mind-boggling. This particular motor laid out 1,950 horsepower, with peak power coming between 7,000 and 8,200 RPM, well past the redline of most production cars.

It’s madness, and it’s coming to a drag strip near you.
