If you’re going to push the envelope of what a racecar can do you better make sure the engine is filled with reliable parts, or you’ll end up with a lot of headaches. USP Motorsports [1] wanted to see what their boosted VR6-powered Audi B5 S4 was capable of, so they enlisted Ferrea Racing Components [2] to help build a bulletproof valvetrain that could take some high-revving abuse. The result was a new Audi record with room to go even deeper into the eight-second zone.

USP’s S4 started life as a street car before a roll cage from Race Car Builders along with custom Penske [5] shocks and Eibach [6] springs made their way onto the car. To give the Audi plenty of power a three-liter Volkswagen VR6 engine was added to the car backed by an SQS Racing [7] transmission and getting boost from a 76 mm Precision [8] turbo. This combination helps the car make over 1,200 horsepower and allowed driver Chris Green to reset the Audi record in America with an 8.70-second pass at over 171 mph.

Making this kind of power with a boosted engine that spins so hard requires a durable valvetrain to say the least, so USP made sure to outfit it with Ferrea parts. According to USP Motorsports Phil Luis, Ferrea was the best choice to reach their goals with the Audi. “The car uses the 1 mm oversize valve kit along with a full set of titanium retainers from Ferrea. We’ve been working with them since 2001 on all our shop and customer cars because their craftsmanship speaks for itself. Since they’re local to the shop, they help us figure out any problem we have and their service has always been above the bar.”
