New Cadillac ATS-V Will Have 455-Horsepower Twin-turbo V6

Cadillac is bumping its 3.6-liter twin-turbo V6 to an estimated 455 horsepower with 455 lb-ft peak torque to power the new 2016 ATS-V. Primed as a threat for the BMW M3 and Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG, the potent V6 can be backed with a 6-speed manual that features launch control and no-lift shifting or a paddle-shifted 8-speed auto. Top speed is expected to reach 185 mph.

“The Cadillac Twin Turbo brings a new dimension of technologically advanced performance to the V-Series,” says Richard Bartlett, the car’s assistant chief engineer.

Cadillac has already been using a twin-turbo V6 in other models, but the top rating was 420 horsepower. The extra horsepower is likely from tuning and turning up the boost to around 18 psi.

The direct-injected engine is based on GM’s V6 platform but almost every part is unique to the twin-turbo model, including a cylinder block with cast-in provisions for the turbo coolant and oil connections. Some other features include lightweight turbos with titanium-aluminide turbines, titanium connecting rods and a centrally mounted throttle body that controls the air charge from both turbos. Compression ratio is 10.2:1.

“The high-tumble heads were developed with advanced modeling programs that helped us determine the optimal design in less time and with less trial and error,” explains Bartlett. “Literally hundreds of simulations were performed to optimize the port flow, injector spray angle and pattern, and piston topology to produce a highly efficient yet powerful combustion chamber.”

EngineLabs looked at the turbo system of this engine family in an earlier story.

Production at GM’s Lansing Grand River plant is expected to start next spring.
