One of the first pairs of the new -3 Ultra Dominator 1150 cfm carbs to leave the Holley factory just ended up on top of a 500ci Pro Gas Jet drag boat engine. Westech Performance in Mira Loma, California, handled some early beta testing on the carbs to check out if there were any problems on a marine engine.

“We ran the carbs with race gas and also oxygenated fuel,” reports Steve Brule. “Since the engine left the shop they’ve also had two test sessions on the water with no problem.”

The Pro Gas Jet class is similar to Pro Stock, but the boat racers have no minimum weight and favor aluminum blocks.

“What they give away in a little bit of power they pick up saving 150 pounds over an iron block,” says Brule.

The engine is based on a Donovan alloy block with Reher-Morrison Raptor 12-degree heads with selected goodies from Comp Cams and Jesel. Mike Miller Racing Engines handled the assembly. The Holley carbs feature all-aluminum construction to save weight, large fuel bowls, 3-circuit metering and are fully adjustable for precise tuning.

“This engine might appear to be over-carbed, and for some these carbs might not be the first choice for cars that accelerate through the gears,” says Brule. “But these boats go from a dead idle to 8,500 rpm fast where it can use that cfm. Think of a dragster with an 8,500-stall converter and 1-speed tranny going from idle to 8,500.”
