Cosworth F1 Engine Key to Land Speed Car Hitting 1,000 MPH

A Cosworth Formula 1 engine revved to 17,500 rpm in helping the Bloodhound SSC crew testfire its 12-foot-long rocket engine for the first time, giving engineers massive amounts of data to evaluate.

The Bloodhound is looking to be the first land-speed vehicle to surpass 1,000 mph or Mach 1.4. Officials hope to make a run next year in South Africa.

Check out the video below. You can hear the F1 engine screaming just before the blast.

The Cosworth CA 2010 engine is part of the unique hybrid jet/rocket system on the Bloodhound. The 2.4-liter V8, rated at 750 horsepower, is used to pump High Test Peroxide (HTP) into a solid-fuel rocket at 820 psi. It’s actually mounted backwards in the Bloodhound and will pump about nine gallons of HTP per second. By comparison, a Top Fuel engine has a fuel pump capable of 116 gallons per minute, or 1.9 gallons per second, at around 600 psi.

The car also uses a Rolls Royce EJ200 jet engine in the propulsion system. The plan calls for the jet to propel the car past 200 mph before the rocket engine is fired.

Overall, the rocket burned for 10 seconds, generating 14,000 pounds of thrust, or about 30,000 to 40,000 horsepower. Officials said the noise level reached 185 dB. By comparison, a Top Fuel dragster hits about 150-160 dB at full power. The experiment was conducted inside a hardened air shelter. Officials said it was the largest rocket test fired in England in more than 20 years.

Engineers said the Cosworth was at part throttle during the test, so they have confidence that more power is available. In fact, engineers say up to 27,500 pounds of thrust is possible, or 80,000 horsepower.
