Check Out Canton Racing’s New Billet Spin-On Oil Filter Design

So you’ve read the title of the article, and you’re thinking “A new oil filter design? How revolutionary could that be?” Well, it’s not — but it is the one part that could save your engine from true disaster if you have a parts failure. And what’s so special about the filter we’re talking about today — the CM Billet Spin-On Filter from Canton Racing Products?

According to Canton’s Jeff Behuniak, “The filter came about because we were finding a lot of racers were cutting their regular filters apart to inspect the media. An easy solution for us was to build a body with a removable and replaceable element — they can just pull it out and unroll it to look at it that way.”

As you can see from this cutaway image, the filter media is rolled around the inner cage of the element. When you take it out of the can, you can remove the end caps and simply unroll it for inspection.

The filter we used on Project BlownZ, in conjunction with our Peterson Fluid Systems Filter Mount and Primer, is Part Number 25-244, and consists of a 4.25-inch-tall billet housing that uses 13/16-inch-16 threads and uses a standard-size O-ring, just like any other filter you’d typically use.

The element inside the filter has removable caps, and the synthetic media inside will filter up to 15 gallons per minute of hot engine oil with zero loss of pressure.

The fiber will filter particles all the way down to eight microns — that’s three ten-thousandths of an inch. The filter body is a billet work of art — it has four simple bolts to aid in removal of the 2 5/8-inch-tall element, which can subsequently be inspected and replaced.

The real star of the show here is the internal element. Canton went to great lengths to develop a product that would be useful for the racer and provide an affordable means to protect the engine. The filter housing is available for a reasonable price, and once you’ve purchased the housing, individual internal elements don’t cost any more than a decent filter at the parts store — about $11.50 each, and they can be purchased in six or 24-packs.

“The element has a real advantage over other products on the market. Because it’s wrapped around the depth of the filter itself it’s able to filter such small particles without any type of pressure loss. The pressure of the oil forces it through the element, which keeps the flow consistent,” says Behuniak.

Here you can see the filter in action — it’s no different in size from any other traditional racing filter, but the serviceability is what sets it apart.

The element itself can be unrolled and inspected for any foreign particles. Instead of pleated construction like a typical off-the-shelf filter, the layers of the element are rolled around the inner cage, then captured by an outer cage to keep it in position; it’s subsequently capped at both ends to retain the media.

Ten holes around the circumference of the top of the filter housing allow the oil to enter the housing, where it flows through the element, is forced through the center outlet and back into the engine through our Peterson Filter Mount.

The filter design is available two different sizes: the 15GPM version we have and a larger, 6.25-inch-tall version that flows a whopping 45 gallons per minute for the larger engines out there requiring that type of flow.

Disassembly is simple — there are five bolts that hold the bottom plate to the billet housing. Remove those, unscrew the end cap, and the filter element simply pulls out of the canister, which remains mounted securely to the baseplate.

A cross-section of the entire filter.

Having the ability to take the filter apart at the track to inspect it can potentially save your engine from much greater damage, especially if you’ve had a minor parts failure and want to make sure there are no particles in the oil. Canton’s hit a home run with this one. Check it out!
