PRI 2013: New Internal Wastegate Actuator By Turbosmart For Cummins

Turbosmart-03

Historically, if you ran an internally wastegated turbine housing there was one or two wastegate actuators to choose from. If you were looking for higher boost pressures than what was available, you looked to the aftermarket. Some aftermarket manufacturers would cut the actuator rod to shorten it. By keeping the actuator diaphragm in the same place, the shorter rod would put more force on the actuator. This meant that it would require more boost pressure to open the gate, thus increasing the working pressure range of the actuator. While this stresses the internal components, it is a way to increase the working pressure up a few psi. That is great if all you need is a few pounds. If you were looking for 35 or 40 psi of boost out of a turbo and it had a 20 psi actuator, it would be pretty difficult to modify the actuator to work.

To get higher ranges out of the actuator, some people poke small pin size holes in the boost line running to the actuator. This essentially bleeds off the boost pressure being sent to the actuator and it takes more boost pressure to open the gate. This does work, but dialing in a specific setting becomes extremely difficult if not impossible.

Turbosmart realized the problem people were having and engineered a solution. They have engineered a wastegate actuator specifically for the aftermarket. These new actuators are direct bolt-on for the Cummins. They are able to work at pressure ranges from 10 psi to 40 psi depending on which actuator you pick up. In addition, they feature a threaded end for fine tune adjustment.

“Turbosmart’s IWG line is the first of it’s kind on the market. Historically, there’s been only OEM style, stamped steel, can actuators available. The IWG HP was carefully designed and tested, with the help of some of our diesel performance partners, to be the first internal wastegate replacement that is a true performance upgrade,” said Kirstin Stone, Marketing Manager Turbosmart USA.
